How we chose

Ranked on published manufacturer specs and features for painting the interior walls of a home; not hands-on tested. Every spec is quoted from the maker's product page or manual, linked under each pick, and was checked on . We show no ratings, and no prices except Amazon's own, with the time Amazon reported them; the order is our judgment on these criteria:

  1. Overspray control. Indoors, overspray drifts onto floors, trim and windows, and it is paint that never reaches the wall. A maker that publishes how much less overspray its tips give ranks above one that only says they give less.
  2. Paint supply. Walls take gallons. A pump that draws paint straight from a 1 or 5 gallon container keeps spraying until the bucket is empty; a tank or a cup has to be refilled.
  3. Max tip size. The largest tip a sprayer takes sets the thickest coating it can spray. Every airless pick ships a 515 tip, which Wagner lists for water- and oil-based paints and primers; a larger maximum leaves room for heavier coatings.
  4. Max flow. Gallons per minute is the most paint the pump can deliver, which keeps up with larger tips and longer hose runs.
  5. Hose length. A longer hose lets the pump stay in one place while you work from room to room, so you move the gun, not the sprayer and the bucket.

The picks in detail

1. Best overall for interior walls: Wagner Control Pro 150

One of two picks with a published overspray figure, up to 55% less than standard airless, and the only one of the two that draws paint from 1 or 5 gallon containers, so a four-room job's at least 7.32 gal comes straight from 2 five-gallon buckets. It delivers 0.29 gpm at up to 1,500 psi, takes tips up to 0.015 in, and Wagner designs it for up to 175 gal a year.

Ranked on: overspray control, paint supply, max flow, recommended annual use.

2. Best for whole-house interiors: Graco ProX17 17G177

The most capable bucket-fed pump here: 0.34 gpm, tips up to 0.017 in, and 50 ft of hose in the box with support for up to 150 ft, so the pump can stay in a hallway while you work through every room. Graco designs it for up to 300 gal a year, and its pump swaps out on the job without tools. It ranks second because Graco publishes no overspray figure for its SoftSpray tip.

Ranked on: paint supply, max tip size, max flow, hose length, recommended annual use.

3. Best for moving room to room: Graco 262805

The same 0.017 in maximum tip as the pick above, which Graco says lets it spray heavier coatings, on a cart with a hook for a 5 gallon pail, so the pump and the paint roll from room to room together. It delivers 0.31 gpm, comes with 25 ft of hose and supports up to 100 ft.

Ranked on: paint supply, max tip size, max flow, hose length.

4. Best lightweight airless for a few rooms: Graco 262800

At 17 lb, the lightest of the three Graco picks, and it still draws from a 1 or 5 gallon container, at up to 0.27 gpm with tips up to 0.015 in. A 25 ft hose comes with it, and it supports up to 75 ft. Graco designs it for up to 125 gal a year, so a four-room job's at least 7.32 gal is well within its range; its smaller maximum tip and shorter hose reach rank it below the cart model.

Ranked on: paint supply, max tip size, hose length, recommended annual use.

5. Best tank-fed sprayer for a room or two: Wagner Control Pro 130

The same High Efficiency Airless tip and up to 55% overspray figure as the top pick, but paint goes into a 1.5 gal gravity-fed tank instead of coming from the bucket: one room's at least 1.83 gal is 2 fills, and the four-room job is 5. The 515 HEA tip is the largest it takes, and Wagner publishes no flow rate.

Ranked on: overspray control, paint supply, max tip size.

Wagner · Paint sprayers

6. Best HVLP for accent walls and small rooms: Wagner FLEXiO 5000

An HVLP sprayer: the turbine stays on the floor and feeds the gun through an 11.5 ft air hose, and Wagner lists its iSpray nozzle for walls and ceilings and its Detail Finish nozzle for trim and cabinets. It sprays unthinned latex. Paint goes in a cup, and Wagner publishes no cup size or flow rate, so it suits an accent wall or a small room rather than a whole floor.

Ranked on: paint supply, hose length.

What to look for

Interior walls are a large, flat, indoor job: gallons of paint, and floors, trim and windows within reach of every pass. The specs that matter follow from that:

  • Paint supply. The four bucket-fed airless picks pull paint through a suction tube from a 1 or 5 gallon container, so you spray until the bucket is empty. The Control Pro 130 holds 1.5 gal in its tank, and the FLEXiO 5000 sprays from a cup.
  • Overspray. Overspray is paint that drifts off as mist instead of landing on the wall. Wagner publishes a figure for its High Efficiency Airless (HEA) tips, up to 55% less than standard airless sprayers; Graco says its SoftSpray tips give less overspray but publishes no figure. Either way, cover floors and mask trim and windows before you spray.
  • Maximum tip size. In Graco's tip code the first digit doubled is the fan width in inches at 12 in from the surface, and the last two digits are the orifice in thousandths of an inch. Every airless pick ships a 515 tip, which Wagner lists for water- and oil-based paints and primers. Graco says larger orifices suit thicker materials: the X7 and ProX17 take tips up to 0.017 in, the X5 and Control Pro 150 up to 0.015 in.
  • Maximum flow. The most paint the pump can deliver, from 0.27 gal per minute (X5) to 0.34 (ProX17). It is a pump rating, not a working rate, so it says little about how long a room takes.
  • Hose length. A longer hose lets the pump stay in one place while you work from room to room. The X5 comes with 25 ft and supports up to 75 ft, the X7 up to 100 ft, and the ProX17 comes with 50 ft and supports up to 150 ft. Both Control Pros come with 25 ft.
  • Recommended annual use. Graco and Wagner state the gallons a year each sprayer is designed for: 125 for the X5 and X7, 175 for the Control Pro 150 and 300 for the ProX17.
Diagram of the 515 airless tip code: 5 times 2 gives a 10 in fan at 12 in from the wall, and 15 means a 0.015 in orifice; the largest tips are 0.015 in for the Graco X5 and Wagner Control Pro 150, 0.017 in for the Graco X7 and ProX17, and a 515 HEA tip for the Wagner Control Pro 130
Graco's tip code read for a 515 tip, and the largest tip each airless pick takes. Wagner states the Control Pro 130's limit as a tip number, not in inches.

In the comparison table, the FLEXiO 5000 reads “Not published” for maximum tip, maximum flow and recommended use: those are airless pump ratings, and Wagner gives no equivalent for this HVLP cup sprayer.

How much paint, and how often you refill

Work out the paint before you choose the sprayer. The paint calculator's default example is the four walls of a 12 × 14 ft room, 52 ft of wall 8 ft high, less 50 sq ft of doors and windows, with 2 coats at 400 sq ft per gallon. That coverage is the low end of the spread rate Benjamin Moore publishes for Regal Select Eggshell (N549), used here only as an example; use the figure on your own paint's label.

Paint for one room and for four
One room = 52 ft × 8 ft − 50 sq ft = 366 sq ft
Paint       = 366 × 2 coats ÷ 400 = 1.83 gal → 2 one-gallon cans
Four rooms = 1,464 sq ft × 2 ÷ 400 = 7.32 gal → 2 five-gallon buckets
Tank fills = 7.32 ÷ 1.5 gal = 4.88 → 5 fills (one room: 2)
What 7.32 gal for four rooms means for each paint supply

CupFLEXiO 5000Not worked out: Wagner publishes no cup size

Containers rounded up the way the paint calculator rounds them, so you never buy less than the job needs.

Bar chart: four 12 by 14 ft rooms with 2 coats need at least 7.32 gallons of paint, which is 2 five-gallon buckets for a bucket-fed sprayer or 5 fills of the Wagner Control Pro 130's 1.5 gallon tank
The four-room job's 7.32 gal fills 2 five-gallon buckets with paint left over, or the Control Pro 130's tank 5 times.

Treat these as floors. The calculator's gallons are paint on the wall at the label's coverage. A sprayer also loses some paint as overspray, and some fills the pump and hose when you prime and stays there when you clean up. None of the makers here publishes how much, so buy at least the calculator's figure, rounded up to whole containers. Measure first with how to measure a room for paint and drywall, and check whether you need a primer or a third coat in how many coats of paint you need.

Airless, HEA or HVLP?

An airless sprayer pumps paint to the tip at high pressure, up to 3,000 psi for the three Graco picks, and the tip breaks it into a fan. Wagner's High Efficiency Airless runs lower, up to 1,500 psi on the Control Pro 150 and 1,600 psi on the Control Pro 130, with tips Wagner says cut overspray by up to 55%. Both kinds suit whole walls and ceilings, and both need the room masked.

An HVLP sprayer such as the FLEXiO 5000 sprays from a cup with air from a turbine. Wagner lists its iSpray nozzle for walls and ceilings and its Detail Finish nozzle for trim and cabinets, so it can do the walls and the woodwork of one room. With no published cup size or flow rate, it is the pick for an accent wall or a small room rather than a whole floor. For furniture and cabinets, the painting section of our top tool picks also lists HomeRight's cup-fed Super Finish Max.

Frequently asked questions

Is an airless or HVLP paint sprayer better for interior walls?

For whole rooms, airless. The airless picks here pump paint from the bucket or tank to the tip at up to 3,000 psi (1,500 to 1,600 psi for Wagner's High Efficiency Airless models), and the bucket-fed ones deliver 0.27 to 0.34 gal per minute. An HVLP sprayer such as the FLEXiO 5000 sprays from a cup with air from a turbine, and Wagner publishes no flow rate for it, so it suits an accent wall, a small room, trim and cabinets.

What size spray tip should I use for interior walls?

Start with the 515 tip that comes with each airless pick. In Graco's tip code the first digit doubled is the fan width in inches at 12 in from the wall, and the last two digits are the orifice in thousandths of an inch, so Graco's 515 sprays a 10 in fan through a 0.015 in orifice. Wagner lists its 515 tip for water- and oil-based paints and primers. Graco says larger orifices suit thicker materials, so check that a sprayer's maximum tip, 0.015 or 0.017 in for these picks, covers the tip your coating calls for.

How much paint do I need to spray a room?

Work it out by area. The paint calculator's 12 × 14 ft room, with 8 ft walls less 50 sq ft of doors and windows, is 366 sq ft, and two coats at 400 sq ft per gallon take at least 1.83 gal, so 2 one-gallon cans. A sprayer also loses some paint as overspray and holds some in the pump and hose, and none of these makers publishes how much, so treat the calculator's figure as the minimum.

What is a High Efficiency Airless (HEA) sprayer?

It is Wagner's airless design for its Control Pro sprayers. It runs at lower pressure than the Graco picks here, up to 1,500 psi on the Control Pro 150 and 1,600 psi on the Control Pro 130 against 3,000 psi, and Wagner says its HEA tips produce up to 55% less overspray than traditional airless sprayers.

Do I need to thin paint for a paint sprayer?

Not for these picks, according to their makers. Graco says the X5 and X7 pumps spray unthinned paints, Wagner says the Control Pros spray unthinned paints and stains, and Wagner says the FLEXiO 5000 sprays unthinned latex. Follow your paint's label too.

Did you test these paint sprayers?

No. They are ranked on each manufacturer's published specs for painting interior walls, and every spec on this page links to the maker's own page or manual. The paint figures come from this site's paint calculator.
