How we chose

Ranked on published manufacturer specs and features for measuring rooms, slabs and roofs for home-project material estimates; not hands-on tested. Every spec is quoted from the maker's product page or manual, linked under each pick, and was checked on . We show no ratings, and no prices except Amazon's own, with the time Amazon reported them; the order is our judgment on these criteria:

  1. Area, volume and indirect functions. Built-in area and volume math saves a step when you measure many rooms, and indirect functions work out a height or length you cannot reach, from a right triangle of readings.
  2. Tilt sensor (angle measurement). A tilt sensor reads a slope's angle directly, such as a rafter's, which is the number you need for a roof's pitch and its sloped length.
  3. Range for the job. Rooms need a fraction of any pick's range. Long outdoor runs, such as a lot line, a driveway or the side of a house, need a longer range and a way to see the dot in daylight.
  4. Published accuracy. Every pick publishes ±1/16 in for room-length readings, so accuracy separates them less than functions do. We favor makers that state the distance their figure holds to.
  5. Bluetooth. Sending readings to a phone app saves copying a list of room dimensions by hand, and keeps them with notes and photos of the job.
  6. Dust and water protection. A published IP rating means the maker rates the case against dust and water, which matters on a job site and outdoors.

What to look for in a laser measure

A laser measure reads the distance to the spot where its beam lands. For estimating materials, the specs that separate one from another are what it does with the readings and where you can use it, more than its accuracy:

  • Area, volume and indirect functions. Area multiplies two readings and volume three, so a room's floor or a slab's pour comes straight off the screen. Indirect functions work out a height or length from a right triangle of readings when you can't reach the far point. DEWALT's DWHT77200 adds a wall-area mode, the number paint and drywall start from. The Klein 93LDM100C measures length only.
  • A tilt sensor. An inclinometer reads the angle the measure is held at. Laid along a rafter, that is the roof's angle, which you need for its pitch and sloped length. Three picks publish one: the two Bosch models with Bluetooth and Milwaukee's digital level, which shows the angle.
  • Range, and seeing the dot. Every pick reaches far beyond any room. Range matters outdoors, for a lot line, a driveway or the side of a house, where daylight also makes a red dot hard to see. Bosch's green beam and the GLM400CL's zoom camera are answers to that, and Milwaukee's auto-level takes a long reading only when the meter is level.
  • Bluetooth. Two picks send readings to Bosch's MeasureOn app. It saves copying numbers by hand on a big job, and it is not needed for a few rooms.
  • Protection and power. Every pick publishes an IP rating against dust and water; the GLM165-27CGL publishes IP65, the others IP54. Rechargeable lithium-ion packs suit daily use, and AA or AAA cells are easy to replace anywhere.

Measuring a room, a slab and a roof for the calculators

A room takes three readings. Hold the measure against one wall and read to the opposite wall for the length, do the same across the room for the width, and read floor to ceiling for the wall height. Then measure the doors and windows you won't paint or cover. For a 14 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls and 50 sq ft of openings:

One room through three calculators
Floor     = 14 × 12 = 168 sq ft
Walls     = 2 × (14 + 12) × 8 = 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft, less 50 = 366 sq ft
Paint     = 366 × 2 coats ÷ 400 sq ft/gal = 1.83 gal → 2 × 1-gallon cans
Drywall   = 416 + 168 ceiling − 50 = 534 sq ft, + 10% = 587.4 sq ft
Sheets    = 587.4 ÷ 32 sq ft per 4 × 8 ft sheet = 18.36 → 19 sheets
Plan of a 14 by 12 foot room measured with a laser in three readings, 14 ft, 12 ft and an 8 ft wall height, which the calculators turn into 168 sq ft of floor, 366 sq ft of wall to paint and 19 sheets of 4 by 8 ft drywall
Two wall-to-wall readings and a wall height are all the paint, drywall and square footage calculators need for a rectangular room.

Enter the readings in the square footage calculator for the floor, the paint calculator for the walls, and the drywall calculator for walls and ceiling. The paint figure uses an example label coverage of 400 sq ft per gallon; use the coverage on your own can. For L-shaped rooms, gable walls and other shapes, see measuring irregular areas, and how to measure a room for paint and drywall covers which surfaces to count.

A slab or patio is the same two readings outdoors, with the depth from your plan. A 10 × 10 ft slab, 4 in thick with a 10% allowance, comes to 1.36 cu yd in the concrete calculator. Outdoors, aim at a board or a target held at the far stake when the dot is hard to see.

A roof needs its pitch and its horizontal run. With a tilt sensor, lay the measure along a rafter, for example in the attic, and read the angle: a roof that rises 6 in per 12 in of run reads 26.6°. The roof pitch calculator works from rise and run, and turns a 14 ft horizontal run on that roof into 15.65 ft along the slope. Without a tilt sensor, measure the rise over 12 in of run with a level and a tape.

How accurate does a laser measure need to be?

Less than the spec sheets suggest, for material estimates. Every pick publishes ±1/16 in for room-length readings (Klein to 33 ft, DEWALT at 32 ft). If both readings of the 14 × 12 ft room came out 1/16 in long, the floor would be 168.14 sq ft instead of 168: 0.14 sq ft more, or 0.08%. The drywall calculator's 10% allowance on the same room is 53.4 sq ft.

Both readings 1/16 in long
1/16 in = 0.00521 ft
(14 + 0.00521) × (12 + 0.00521) = 168.14 sq ft
168.14 − 168 = 0.14 sq ft (0.08%)

Where accuracy does matter is cutting and fitting: trim, countertops and the last row of flooring. There, hold the measure square to the wall and against a solid surface, and check a critical cut with a tape. For buying paint, drywall, flooring or concrete, a laser's value is speed, reach and the math it does for you. More tools for each kind of project are on the top tool picks page.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are laser distance measures?

All six picks publish ±1/16 in for room-length readings; DEWALT states it at 32 ft, and Klein's figure holds to 33 ft and becomes ±1/8 in out to 100 ft. On a 14 × 12 ft room, both readings 1/16 in long add 0.14 sq ft to the floor, 0.08% of it.

Can a laser measure calculate square footage?

Five of the six picks have an area function that multiplies two readings, and most also do volume. The Klein 93LDM100C measures length only, so you enter its readings in the square footage calculator, which also adds and subtracts shapes for L-shaped rooms.

Do laser measures work outdoors?

Yes, but the dot is harder to see in daylight, so the usable distance outdoors can be shorter than the published range. Bosch says its green beam is up to 4× brighter than a standard red one, and the GLM400CL has a zoom camera to find the spot at long distances.

How do I measure roof pitch with a laser measure?

Lay a measure with a tilt sensor along a rafter, for example from the attic, and read the angle: a roof that rises 6 in per 12 in of run reads 26.6°. The roof pitch calculator works from rise and run, and turns a 14 ft horizontal run on that roof into 15.65 ft along the slope.

Do I need Bluetooth on a laser measure?

Only if you want readings in an app. The two Bluetooth picks send measurements to Bosch's MeasureOn app, which keeps them with floor plans, photos and notes. For a few rooms, writing the readings down and entering them in the calculators works as well.

Did you test these laser measures?

No. They are ranked on each manufacturer's published specs for measuring rooms, slabs and roofs, and every spec on this page links to the maker's own page or manual. The room, slab and roof figures are computed with this site's calculators.
