# Best Drywall Screw Guns (2026)

Cordless and corded drywall screw guns ranked on published specs for hanging drywall, with the screws for a room worked out from USG's fastener table.

Buying guide page: <https://www.howmanyyardsdoineed.com/best/drywall-screw-guns/> (published 2026-10-06, updated 2026-10-06). This Markdown version has the picks, how they were ranked, their published specs and the figures behind them; product links and the full article are on the page.

## Key takeaways

- A drywall screw gun's depth-setting nose sinks every screw just below the face paper, as USG's installation guide asks; a drill can do the job, with care not to overdrive.
- The drywall calculator's example room takes 19 sheets, 608 sq ft of panels: 1.9 lb of 1-1/4 in Type W screws by USG's fastener table.
- Cordless picks rank first; among them a contact-start mode, published runtime, a collated option and a published weight decide the order.
- A 48 in T-square and 8, 10 and 12 in taping knives finish the kit.
- Picks are ranked on the makers' published specs for this job, not on our own use of them.

## How we chose

Ranked on published manufacturer specs and features for hanging drywall on a DIY project; not hands-on tested. Every spec is quoted from the maker's product page or manual and was checked on 2026-10-06. No prices or ratings are shown; the order is a judgment on these criteria:

1. **Adjustable depth-setting nose.** It sinks every screw to the same depth, just below the face paper, which is what USG's installation guide asks for. Every pick has one. The criteria below are applied in order: each one only separates picks that the ones above leave tied.
2. **Cordless before corded.** No cord to drag up a ladder or across a ceiling. A corded gun needs no batteries, so the two corded picks rank after the cordless ones, in their own order.
3. **A published contact-start mode.** The motor starts only when you press the screw against the board, so the gun is quiet between screws and, by Milwaukee's and Bosch's accounts, a charge lasts longer. Milwaukee calls it Auto Start, Metabo HPT automatic mode, DEWALT pushstart and Bosch Xtend Drive.
4. **Published runtime per charge.** A maker that states how much one charge drives lets you plan batteries for a job. This credits publishing a figure: Milwaukee counts sheets and RYOBI counts screws, so we never compare the two.
5. **A collated option.** A magazine that feeds strips of screws saves loading each one by hand on a big job. An attachment you can add later and a feed built in both count.
6. **Published weight, lighter first.** You hold the gun overhead for ceilings. A pick whose maker publishes no weight ranks after those that do.

## The picks in detail

### 1. Best overall for hanging drywall: Milwaukee 2866-20

**Milwaukee 2866-20 M18 FUEL Drywall Screw Gun.** Cordless, with Auto Start: the motor starts only when the bit is pressed against the drywall. It is the only pick whose maker publishes runtime in sheets, 64 per charge on an XC5.0 battery and 27 on a CP2.0, so either battery covers the calculator's 19-sheet example room on one charge. Its depth collar moves 1/64 in every two clicks, and the 49-20-0001 Collated Magazine takes screws up to 2 in. Milwaukee publishes no weight for it.

Ranked on: adjustable depth-setting nose, cordless before corded, a published contact-start mode, published runtime per charge, a collated option.

- Power source: Cordless: M18 battery
- No-load speed: 4,500 rpm
- Depth setting: Depth adjusting collar: every two clicks change the depth by 1/64 in
- Motor start: Auto Start: the motor starts when the bit is pressed against the drywall
- Runtime per charge: 64 sheets on an M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 battery, 27 sheets on a CP2.0
- Collated screws: 49-20-0001 Collated Magazine (separate accessory), screws up to 2 in

## Figures behind the picks

Computed with this site's calculators; the page shows the working.

- Calculator example: 14 × 12 ft room, 8 ft walls and the ceiling, 50 sq ft of openings, 10% allowance: 534 sq ft to cover; 19 sheets of 4 × 8 ft
- Panel area of those 19 sheets: 608 sq ft
- USG's fastener table, row at or above 608 sq ft of panels: 700 sq ft: 1.9 lb of Type W screws
- USG's fastener table for 1,000 sq ft of panels: 2.7 lb of Type W screws
- Milwaukee 2866-20 charges for the example room's 19 sheets: XC5.0: 1 (64 sheets per charge); CP2.0: 1 (27 sheets per charge)

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a drywall screw gun, or will a drill work?

A drill works if you stop each screw by hand at the right depth. USG's installation guide asks for "an electric screwgun equipped with an adjustable screw depth control head" and warns that with a drill you must "be careful not to overdrive screws." A screw gun's nose stops every screw at the depth you set, for every screw in the room.

### How deep should drywall screws go?

Just below the surface, with the paper intact: USG says to "sink screws to just below the panel surface, leaving the paper intact." Milwaukee's manual adds that a screw driven too deep punches through the paper and is hard to finish, and one left too shallow sticks above the face and can't be finished off.

### How many drywall screws do I need?

USG's fastener table gives 2.7 lb of Type W screws per 1,000 sq ft of panels, spaced 12 in on ceilings and 16 in on walls. The drywall calculator's example room, 19 sheets or 608 sq ft, reads the 700 sq ft row: 1.9 lb. USG states screws by weight per area, not per sheet.

### How far apart should drywall screws be?

USG's guide for its Sheetrock panels on wood framing: a maximum of 12 in apart on ceilings and 16 in on walls, and at least 3/8 in from the ends and edges of each panel. Follow your panel maker's instructions and local code where they differ.

### Is a collated screw gun worth it for a DIY job?

For a room or two, single screws are fine: the example room is 19 sheets. A collated feed saves loading each screw on a bigger job. Milwaukee, Metabo HPT and DEWALT sell a magazine that fits their cordless guns here, so you can add one later; the Metabo HPT W6V4SD2 has the feed built in. Collated guns take screws on strips.

### Did you test these screw guns?

No. They are ranked on each manufacturer's published specs for hanging drywall, and every spec on this page links to the maker's page or manual. The screw figures come from this site's drywall calculator and USG's fastener table.
